Ableton Live 7
Site Review: Many superlatives could be used here - but we'll shy away from that and simply say that Ableton's Live software has re-invented the wheel when it comes to live DJ performances. Not only that either, it's flexibility, easy-to-use interface and carefully thought out workflow processes makes it the production tool of choice for many producers.
Ableton Live's many groundbreaking features include a Warp feature, which will time-stretch in real-time allowing you to get tracks / samples to fit within seconds. There's two different screen views too - Session View and Arrangement View. The former is based on cells, with each individual cell being able to hold a recording, MIDI file or other musical item. Improvisation is easy and this Session View is one of Live's major successes. The latter, the Arrangment View, offers the traditional timeline-based approach seen in many other sequencers. What's more switching between the two is as easy as pressing the TAB key.
With the uninterrupted creative flow that Ableton Live offers - allowing you to add effects, record and mix without ever stopping the music - it's no wonder that it's out there on it's own as market-leader in digital DJ'ing. A DJ can literally remix tracks in real-time, constrained by nothing - and the experience can still be hands-on too, as almost every function in the program can be assigned to a hardware MIDI Controller!
